Who he is
Gu Yue Chi Lian is one of the elders who watches the Aperture Opening Ceremony, and the novel introduces him already losing at it.
The red-haired elder, Gu Yue Chi Lian, gave a cold snort but made no reply, his expression sullen and grim.

His response to a rival elder's good fortune is pure spite.
Gu Yue Chi Lian shouted with a triumphant laugh, glaring challengingly at Gu Yue Mo Chen.

And the triumph was manufactured. His grandson's result, announced to the clan as Grade B Aptitude, was a deliberate lie he arranged.
His aptitude was actually only Grade C, but his grandfather, Gu Yue Chi Lian, had arranged the deception that made it appear to be Grade B.

Why he matters
Chi Lian is the first elder the novel lets you see from the inside, and what you find is not wisdom but a man playing status games with children's exam results. He is why Fang Yuan does not bother courting the clan's favour: at the top of this village, the game is small.
