Chapter 3, paragraph 8
She attends him with a care that is noticeably warmer than service requires.
Shen Cui attended him with gentle care, a bright smile on her face and coquettish warmth in her eyes.
Chapter 3, paragraph 11
Why she matters
A five-hundred-year-old cultivator looks at a servant girl and sees a person with motives, and the novel lets you watch him do it. Shen Cui is where the reader learns how Fang Yuan reads a room: not as a boy flattered by attention, but as someone who has watched a thousand people want something from someone who could give it.
She is also the first knot between the two brothers, since Fang Zheng wants exactly what she is giving away.
When Fang Zheng came in, he saw Shen Cui smoothing the creases in Fang Yuan’s clothes over his chest, and a glint of envy and jealousy involuntarily flickered in his eyes.
