Gu Yue Mo Chen is the elder whose good fortune turns Gu Yue Chi Lian sour, and the novel fixes him with a single physical detail.

Chi Lian's challenge is aimed at him for a reason, as the two elders' interests run in opposite directions, and the ceremony is where that rivalry becomes public.

Why he matters to the reader
