What one is

A Gu Master is a person whose Primeval Sea has opened, allowing them to hold and use Gu. Until that happens, no amount of talent matters.

Right now, my primeval sea is not yet open; I have not even stepped onto the cultivation path of a Gu Master.

Chapter 2, paragraph 18

How they are ranked

By rank, not age, and the ranks carry real meaning in the first chapter, where Bai Ning Bing's reputation is entirely a fact about his rank.

In just two short years, he had already cultivated to Rank 3 Gu Master, standing unrivaled among the younger generation.

Chapter 1, paragraph 43

What a rank is worth

For Fang Yuan, in a fifteen-year-old's body with a five-hundred-year-old mind, rank is not a matter of pride, but the baseline requirement for safety.

Only if I reach the cultivation base of a Rank 3 Gu Master will I have the baseline ability to protect myself and traverse the mountains and rivers of this world.

Chapter 2, paragraph 21

The clan's own expectations are laid out in numbers during the ceremony (see Aptitude for how many years each grade of talent is expected to buy and which rank it reaches.

Why they matter

In this world, "Gu Master" is also a social position: the dividing line between people who count and people who are merely alive. The ceremony in Gu Yue Village exists to find that line and draw it through a room of children.
