Who he is
Bai Ning Bing belongs to the Bai Clan, the neighbouring clan on Qing Mao Mountain, and is the young genius the Gu Yue Clan has no answer for.
The novel introduces him not as a person but as a yardstick, letting the reader learn what he has accomplished before anything else.
In just two short years, he had already cultivated to Rank 3 Gu Master, standing unrivaled among the younger generation.
Chapter 1, paragraph 43
Why he matters in chapter 1
Bai Ning Bing is the reason the Aperture Opening Ceremony matters so much this year. Every hope the elders voice about a talented youth is really a hope about him, and the sentence they say out loud is the sentence that measures their own weakness.
If this child tests with Grade A Aptitude and is properly nurtured, he may well be able to contend with Bai Ning Bing.
Chapter 1, paragraph 49
What he is, as far as you have read
A name, a clan, a rank, and a problem. That is all the chapters have given, and in a story that opens by measuring everyone against him, it is enough to make him the shadow over the whole first arc.
